Colors. They are all around us, and they are also an essential element of your Brand Identity. As such, colors can be a powerful tool to make your visuals unique, memorable and recognizable. But sometimes, developing your visual identity can be a challenging project.
So, what makes a color scheme “right” or “appropriate”?
There are many aspects to consider, including your audience, mission, niche, and Brand Personality. Also, there are many approaches and methods (for example, color psychology, color symbolism, and many more). Yet, when working with independent brands, designers and makers, I often find that the most urgent drive in choosing the color palette is a personal gut feeling. This is not surprising. As many independent brands and creative projects blossom from the expression of the founder’s creative vision, developing an identity rooted in their inner sense of style is an authentic necessity. Despite that sense of direction – even if you work with talented professionals – you still might get stuck on what colors can better represent your brand or what color combinations are best for your specific project.
In these situations, when they feel stuck, some people resort to the Internet to browse ideas and color palettes – for example, on Pinterest, Instagram and other apps. Yes, having plenty of options at our fingertips on our phones is convenient, but are we sure that the result of our creative work will be personal, distinctive and memorable? If we can find those materials so easily, millions of other people will find and use them as well – including our competitors. Don’t be that lazy person who creates average work. You are much more than that!
Bring your creativity and perspective out and be unique.
Instead of following the convenient path by skimming commercial content developed to last on social media for just a few hours, the next time you lack a touch of genius try these three unconventional and quirky ideas to find inspiration for your visual identity and collections.
Inspiration # 1
Exotic birds and other animals
Have you ever noticed how colorful (and beautiful) birds are? It turns out that those colors and color combinations can be a great source of inspiration for your business. For example, I feel naturally drawn to intense colors like blue, purple and green, so peacocks could be a great starting point to explore my options regarding color combinations and palettes.
Actionable Tip
If you don’t know where to start, visit a museum of natural history, a center of conservation, education and research, or any other place where you can respectfully experience these complex patterns and vibrant colors in person. Nature rarely makes mistakes, and you will be surprised by how sophisticated some color combinations are in plumage.
Inspiration # 2
Minerals, gems, stones
If birds are not your thing, try to explore the beauty and richness of minerals, gems, and stones. From precious marbles to fine jewelry, the opportunities to find inspiration are endless.
Actionable Tip
During your next trip to Spain or Italy, experience the refined opulence of marble and other natural stones: they are widely used in interior design and furnishings in those countries. If you’re not planning a trip yet, many universities have a mineral exhibition or a mineralogical collection, so you will likely find one in your area.
Inspiration # 3
Flowers and plants
Another great way to find inspiration in nature is by observing the kaleidoscopic, bold, and delicate colors in flowers and plants.
Actionable Tip
Visit a park, garden, or botanical garden to immerse yourself in exciting textures and boldly pigmented blooms while also benefiting from a peaceful, lively, and refreshing physical environment.
Are you worried about your productivity because you are busy and concerned about wasting time if you go out?
Keep in mind
It might seem counterintuitive, but it’s actually the other way around. Going out, you will likely feel more energized and motivated, resulting in improved productivity, engagement, and quality of your work. So give yourself a chance to experience this stimulating rush of energy and enthusiasm. You will not regret it.
Inspiration is all around us. Go out in the open, expose yourself to something new and different, and experience the beauty and enlightenment that mother nature provides. By being surrounded by natural beauty, you will feel enriched, empowered and inspired. Take this opportunity to experience the physical world and do these activities regularly to educate your eye and develop a unique voice. You will find a breakthrough vision for your brand in no time!
